The Canadian Government is going to accept 350,000 permanent residence applications every year until 2022. The most significant revelation is Canada’s target for 2022 and this is the first time such information has become publicly available. Therefore, by 2022, the year’s new permanent residents in Canada will account for one per cent of the population, Mendicino said.

Canada will continue to admit the balance of its newcomers under the economic class, with 58 per cent set to arrive through the Express Entry programs, the Provincial Nominee Program, Quebec’s programs, and other federal streams such as the Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIP). Most of the growth will come from the economic class, as its target is going to rise by nearly 10,000 immigrants each year.

Mendicino noted that 95 per cent of Express Entry arrivals have jobs and some 80 per cent are working in their fields. Also, Canada is expecting to settle 49,700 refugees and other protected people in 2020, a number applauded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees representative in Ottawa.
