As of <strong>June 30, 2025<\/strong>, the backlog stood at <strong>842,800 applications<\/strong>, marking a <strong>5.02% increase<\/strong> from <strong>802,000 in May<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This rise occurs even as IRCC shows strong progress in processing <strong>study permit applications<\/strong>, where delays have significantly improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Backlog Trends Over the Last Six Months<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background\"><thead><tr><th><strong>Month<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Backlog Volume<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Monthly Change<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>January 2025<\/td><td>891,100<\/td><td>-5.33%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>February 2025<\/td><td>821,200<\/td><td>-7.95%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>March 2025<\/td><td>779,900<\/td><td>-5.03%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>April 2025<\/td><td>760,200<\/td><td>-2.53%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>May 2025<\/td><td>802,000<\/td><td>+5.5%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>June 2025<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>842,800<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>+5.02%<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As of June 30, IRCC reported a total of <strong>2,189,500 applications<\/strong> across all immigration categories. Of those, <strong>1,346,700<\/strong> were processed within IRCC\u2019s service standards. The remainder form the growing backlog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">What Counts as a Backlog?<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>IRCC considers an application part of the backlog if it exceeds its published processing timelines. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>6 months<\/strong> for Express Entry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>12 months<\/strong> for Family Sponsorship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>IRCC&#8217;s goal is to process <strong>80% of applications<\/strong> within those service standards. However, complex applications that require additional documents or extended assessment periods can take longer and fall into backlog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Permanent Residence Applications<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of June, IRCC had <strong>896,100 applications<\/strong> in inventory for permanent residency (PR) programs. These include Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP), and family sponsorships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of these, <strong>480,300 (54%)<\/strong> were processed within standard timelines, leaving <strong>415,800<\/strong> in backlog\u2014up from <strong>402,400<\/strong> the previous month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Breakdown by program:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Express Entry<\/strong>: 20% in backlog (up from 18%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Express Entry-aligned PNP<\/strong>: 48% in backlog (slightly down from 49%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Family Sponsorship<\/strong>: 14% in backlog (under the 15% target)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Temporary Residence Applications<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There were <strong>1,040,700 applications<\/strong> for temporary residency as of June 30. This category includes <strong>work permits, study permits,<\/strong> and <strong>visitor visas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>661,100 (64%)<\/strong> were processed within service standards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>379,600<\/strong> are currently in backlog<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Breakdown by permit type:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Work Permits<\/strong>: 40% in backlog (up from 38% in May)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Study Permits<\/strong>: 18% in backlog (down from 45% in February), now under the 20% target<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Visitor Visas<\/strong>: 53% in backlog (slight improvement from 54% in May)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Citizenship Applications<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>citizenship grant application<\/strong> backlog remains stable at <strong>19%<\/strong>, the same as in May. This figure remains within IRCC\u2019s target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">IRCC\u2019s Backlog Reduction Measures<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>IRCC continues to implement <strong>advanced analytics and automation tools<\/strong> to speed up application processing. These tools help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sort and prioritize applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify complex files<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summarize information for immigration officers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While these measures show promise, especially with improvements in study permit processing, IRCC still faces challenges in reducing delays in other streams such as work permits and Express Entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">What This Means for Applicants<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants for <strong>study permits<\/strong> may now experience significantly faster processing times.
