Canada’s Citizenship Certificate Processing Time Reaches One Year as Applications Surge from Americans
Canada is witnessing a sharp increase in applications for proof of Canadian citizenship certificates following major changes to the country’s citizenship law, resulting in significantly longer processing times.
According to the latest update, applicants seeking proof of Canadian citizenship can now expect a processing wait of approximately 12 months. Just months earlier, in July 2025, the average processing time was only five months.
The dramatic rise in demand is being largely driven by thousands of Americans who recently became eligible for Canadian citizenship through ancestry after Canada removed key restrictions on citizenship by descent.
Why Applications Have Increased So Rapidly
On December 15, 2025, Canada officially amended its Citizenship Act by removing the first-generation limit for citizenship by descent for individuals born before that date.
Under the updated law, people born before December 15, 2025 can now qualify for Canadian citizenship if they can prove an unbroken line of descent from a Canadian ancestor — regardless of how many generations have passed.
This means that even Americans whose families have lived entirely in the United States for several generations may now be eligible to claim Canadian citizenship.
As awareness of the law spread, demand for citizenship certificates skyrocketed.
Between December 2025 and January 2026 alone, Canada received more than 12,000 citizenship-by-descent applications, with American applicants representing the largest share.
Reports also indicate that in February and March 2026, more than 14,000 additional applicants entered the queue within a single month.

The surge in applications has also placed pressure on archives and government record offices across Canada.
Many applicants require official documents such as:

The Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) reportedly experienced a 3,000% increase in record requests from Americans tracing their Canadian roots.
Large numbers of eligible applicants are believed to come from families connected to French-Canadian migration to the northeastern United States between the 1800s and early 1900s.
