Canada Conducts First Express Entry Draw of May 2026 for Provincial Nominee Candidates
Canada has officially conducted its first Express Entry draw of May 2026, continuing its focus on candidates already nominated by provinces under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued 380 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in the latest Express Entry selection round held on May 11, 2026.
To receive an invitation in this draw, candidates were required to:
- Have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 798; and
- Create their Express Entry profile before 5:23 a.m. UTC on January 7, 2026.
This marks the tenth Provincial Nominee Program draw of the year and the twenty-seventh Express Entry draw conducted by IRCC in 2026.
Provincial Nominee Program Continues to Be a Priority in 2026
The latest draw once again highlights Canada’s increasing reliance on provincial immigration pathways to address labour shortages and regional economic needs.
Candidates who receive a provincial nomination automatically gain an additional 600 CRS points added to their Express Entry profile. This massive score boost almost guarantees an invitation in future Express Entry draws.
A CRS score of 798 in this round indicates that most invited candidates had already secured provincial nominations from participating provinces and territories.
Provincial Nominee Programs are designed to help provinces select skilled workers who match local labour market demands and economic priorities. Provinces continue to target sectors such as healthcare, transportation, trades, technology, agriculture, and hospitality.
Express Entry Draw Trends in 2026
So far in 2026, IRCC has maintained a strong focus on candidates already living and working in Canada, particularly:
- Provincial Nominee Program candidates;
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC) applicants; and
- Category-based selections such as French-language proficiency, healthcare, and skilled trades.
The federal government appears to be prioritizing applicants who can integrate quickly into the Canadian labour market and fill urgent workforce gaps.
Breakdown of Express Entry Draws Conducted in 2026
The following draw categories have been conducted by IRCC this year:
| Draw Type | Number of Draws |
|---|---|
| Provincial Nominee Program | 10 |
| Canadian Experience Class | 8 |
| French-Language Proficiency | 5 |
| Healthcare and Social Services | 1 |
| Trades Occupations | 1 |
| Physicians with Canadian Work Experience | 1 |
| Senior Managers with Canadian Work Experience | 1 |
The numbers clearly show that PNP and Canadian Experience Class draws continue to dominate the Express Entry system in 2026.
More Than 72,000 Invitations Issued So Far This Year
IRCC has already issued 72,007 Invitations to Apply through Express Entry in the first few months of 2026.
Here is the total distribution of invitations by category:
| Draw Type | ITAs Issued |
|---|---|
| Canadian Experience Class | 34,250 |

| Provincial Nominee Program | 4,116 |
| Healthcare and Social Services | 4,000 |
| Trades Occupations | 3,000 |
| Physicians with Canadian Work Experience | 391 |
| Senior Managers with Canadian Work Experience | 250 |
The high number of invitations issued under CEC and French-language categories reflects Canada’s ongoing effort to retain temporary residents already contributing to the country’s economy.
What This Means for Immigration Candidates
The latest Express Entry draw reinforces several important trends for immigration candidates in 2026:
Provincial nominations remain one of the strongest PR pathways
Candidates with lower CRS scores can still receive invitations if they secure a provincial nomination because of the additional 600 CRS points.
CRS scores remain highly competitive
Regular CEC draws continue to see CRS cut-offs above 500, making it increasingly difficult for candidates without Canadian work experience or nominations.
Category-based draws continue to create opportunities
French-speaking candidates, healthcare workers, trades professionals, and specialized workers continue to benefit from targeted selection rounds with comparatively lower CRS requirements.
Canada continues prioritizing in-Canada applicants
IRCC’s draw strategy indicates a clear preference toward candidates already integrated into the Canadian workforce and economy.
