Canada Plans Fast-Track Work Permit Stream for AI Professionals
Canada has announced plans to introduce a new expedited work permit pathway for artificial intelligence professionals, as part of a broader national strategy to strengthen the country’s AI sector and support economic growth.
The proposed AI worker stream was announced by the federal government on June 4, 2026. If implemented, the stream could allow eligible AI professionals to receive work permits in 20 days or less.
The new pathway is expected to operate through Canada’s existing Global Talent Stream under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, which already provides faster processing for highly skilled foreign workers in specialized and in-demand occupations.
New AI Stream Could Offer 20-Day Processing
The proposed stream would use the Global Talent Stream’s fast-processing structure.
Under the current Global Talent Stream model:
- Labour Market Impact Assessments can be processed in approximately 10 business days
- Work permit applications can also be processed in approximately 10 business days
- The total start-to-finish timeline may be around 20 days for eligible cases
This is significantly faster than many regular Temporary Foreign Worker Program work permit applications, which can often take several months to complete.
The government has not yet confirmed the official launch date, eligibility criteria, or specific application process for the proposed AI worker stream.
Permanent Residence Support Also Expected
Alongside faster work permit processing, the federal government has also stated that the new AI worker stream would include measures to support AI professionals in transitioning to Canadian permanent residence.
This could make the pathway especially attractive for skilled tech workers who want to build a long-term future in Canada.
However, further details are still pending on how the permanent residence transition would work and whether it would connect to Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, or another immigration pathway.
Why Canada Is Targeting AI Talent
The announcement forms part of Canada’s new AI for All strategy, which aims to position the country as a global leader in artificial intelligence.
According to the government’s broader plan, Canada wants to:

The Global Talent Stream is a fast-track immigration pathway under Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program.
It is designed to help Canadian employers hire highly skilled foreign workers for specialized roles when qualified talent is not readily available in Canada.
The stream currently has two categories:
Category A
This category is for employers referred by designated partners.
It allows selected employers to hire foreign workers with exceptional and specialized talent, usually demonstrated through:
- Advanced education in a specialized field
- Significant experience in a highly skilled role
- Specialized knowledge needed by the employer
Category B
This category is available to eligible employers hiring workers in occupations listed on the Global Talent Occupations List.
These roles often include jobs in technology, data science, cybersecurity, software development, and other high-demand sectors.
How the New AI Stream May Work
The government has not yet clarified whether the proposed AI pathway will be created as:
- A new category under the Global Talent Stream
- An expansion of the existing Global Talent Occupations List
- A modified version of Category A or Category B
