Express Entry Competition Intensifies Despite Slower Growth in Candidate Pool

Minimal Growth, Maximum Competition: What’s Happening in Express Entry?

Canada’s Express Entry system is entering a new phase where overall growth is slowing down, yet competition at the top is becoming tougher than ever.

Between April 12 and April 26, the Express Entry pool increased by only 897 new profiles, a sharp drop compared to the previous increase of over 2,100 candidates. However, this slower growth does not mean reduced competition—especially for high-scoring applicants.

Instead, the latest data shows that top-ranking candidates are increasing, making it more difficult to secure an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

High-Scoring Candidates Are Driving Competition

The most important shift is happening in the 501–600 CRS score range, which added 250 new candidates in just two weeks.

This marks the second consecutive increase in this bracket after months of decline—indicating that more strong profiles are entering the pool.

At the same time:

  • The 601–1200 range also grew by 147 candidates
  • This increase is mainly due to provincial nominees receiving 600-point boosts
  • The top end of the pool is becoming more crowded and competitive

CEC Draw Trends Reflect Rising Pressure

This growing competition is clearly visible in recent Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draws.

  • April 28 draw issued only 2,000 invitations
  • CRS cut-off remained high at 514
  • Tie-breaking rule went back over 7 months, showing backlog pressure

This confirms that even strong candidates are facing longer wait times and tighter selection thresholds.

Mid-Range CRS Scores Are Declining

While high scores are rising, the mid-range (421–460 CRS) is shrinking.

A total of 1,317 profiles were removed from this range, mainly due to:

  • French-language proficiency draws
  • Trades occupation draws
  • Category-based selections targeting mid-range candidates

This indicates that category-based draws are actively pulling candidates from mid-tier scores, reshaping the pool structure.

Recent Draws Are Not Fully Reflected Yet

The April 26 pool data does not include three major draws held immediately after:

  • April 27: PNP draw (473 ITAs, CRS 795)
  • April 28: CEC draw (2,000 ITAs, CRS 514)
  • April 29: French-language draw (4,000 ITAs, CRS 400)

These draws likely removed:

  • 4,000+ candidates from 400+ CRS ranges
  • 2,000+ candidates from 500+ CRS ranges
  • Hundreds of provincial nominees

This means the pool is constantly replenishing with new applicants, maintaining high competition levels.

Strong Inflow of New Profiles

Despite over 6,300 invitations issued earlier in April, the pool still grew.

This suggests that approximately 7,000+ new candidates entered the system within just two weeks.

The takeaway is clear:
Even when IRCC invites thousands, new applicants quickly replace them.

Understanding the Current Pool Composition

As of April 26, the pool stands at 234,452 candidates, with the following key insights:

  • 501–600 CRS range: Highly competitive and crucial for CEC
  • 451–500 range: Most crowded segment
  • Below 450: Limited chances without category-based or PNP support

The top 6% of candidates (above 500 CRS) now dominate invitation chances.

Why CRS Cut-Offs Are Staying High

Several factors are keeping CRS cut-offs elevated:

  • Reduced CEC draw sizes
  • Increased number of high-scoring profiles
  • Continuous inflow of new candidates
  • Strategic category-based draws

As a result, CRS scores above 510 remain the safest range for CEC invitations.

Key Takeaways for Candidates

  • High CRS scores are becoming more common
  • Competition is strongest at the top of the pool
  • Mid-range candidates must rely on category-based draws
  • Provincial nominations remain a powerful pathway
  • Profile optimization is more important than ever
