CANADA TO SPEED UP SPOUSAL SPONSORSHIP APPLICATION PROCESSING

IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) is aiming to process 6000 spousal sponsorship applications every month from October to December 2020. For the sole purpose of reducing wait times and process these applications more quickly, IRCC has employed more employees.

Therefore, even during the global pandemic times, you will be re-united with your respective spouses very soon. Also, IRCC is implementing new technology to digitize paper applications, and thus, the process of visa approvals will accelerate.

In all, this will result in 49,000 applications receiving decisions by the end of this year.

IRCC noted that the coronavirus pandemic has created uncertainty for Canadian citizens and permanent residents looking to sponsor their spouse. It will continue to seek innovative and compassionate ways to bring families

Under its Immigration Levels Plan 2020-2022, Canada targeted 70,000 spouses, partners, and children to be among the overall 341,000 immigrants it aimed to welcome in 2020. This plan and these targets were set prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The spousal application process is a daunting and time consuming task. It is very administrative for the most part, but can also be overwhelming and challenging should a case not be straight-forward (previous marriages, arranged marriages, marriages less than 2 years, children from previous marriages, common-law relationships) . Typical spousal applications are between 120 – 150 pages, after including all government forms and accompanying evidentiary documents. If documents are required to be translated, it can be as many as 200 pages.
