Minister of Immigration Ahmed Hussen announces that the federal government is launching a Pilot Program in order to increase immigration in rural and northern communities. Usually what happens is that immigrants come and settle in bigger cities which leaves the smaller towns and communities at a disadvantage. Smaller communities don’t get to attract new talent and are left with labour shortages and gaps. Therefore, the government is launching a new Pilot Program where the rural and northern communities that want to be part of the program will need to prove that they are able to welcome and help newcomers integrate. This will include helping with language barriers and having employment set in place. The new program is welcoming approximately 100 newcomers and their family members per community. Interested communities have until March 1, 2019 to submit a complete application. Selected communities will be announced in Spring 2019. Once the selected communities are announced we will be taking clients based on first come first serve basis. So keep an eye out to see if your community qualifies!

Express Entry Draws in 2018
The latest express entry draw by Canada immigration authorities took place on December 19, 2018, saw the minimum Comprehensive Ranking System decline from 445 to 439. 3,900 candidates for the seventh consecutive Express Entry draw receive invitation to apply. The draw brings the total ITAs issued in 2018 to 89,800 against a target of 74,900.
Recently, Immigration minister Ahmed Hussen announced that under three-year Immigration Plan Canada is going to increase its immigration intake to 330,800 in the year 2019, 341,000 in the year 2020 and 350,000 by the year 2021.
“This plan is making us very competitive in the global market. It enables us to continue to be competitive, it enables us to continue to present Canada as a welcoming country and to position us to continue to be (a leader) in skills attraction.”
The reason given behind the proposed action was the desire to boost economic immigration in the country. Hussen said that there are various regions in the country where there is shortage of workers.
“In certain regions the hunger for workers is huge,” he said.
The Conservatives on the other hand opined different views. Conservatives immigration critic Michelle Rempel was critical of the plan and suggested that the government needs improve their working towards intermix the new immigrants.
“It is not enough for this government to table the number of people that they are bringing to this country. Frankly the Liberals need to stop using numbers of refugees, amount of money spent, feel-good tweets and photo ops for metrics of success in Canada’s immigration system.”
